About
Originally from Providence, RI, Sarah Sanderson Meade is an independent designer, artist, and maker living in Belmont, MA. Sarah attended the Rhode Island School of Design where she earned a BFA in Industrial Design in 2001, and a MFA in Furniture Design in 2005. She worked for several years as a product designer for housewares and giftware and later worked in environmental graphic design developing signage and wayfinding systems for museums, hospitals, and universities.
After leaving industry to focus on her family, Sarah began to make rugs when her mother passed along her rug hooking tools. Her interest in the craft grew from there and she now shows her rugs at juried craft sales and gallery shows as well as taking private commissions.
Artist Statement
With a background in industrial design and after years of designing for mass production, I’ve shifted toward designing and making unique and custom pieces. Inspired by the tradition of rug hooking in American folk art, I individually hand make each piece with 100% wool yarn on a monks cloth backing. I enjoy developing designs inspired by the things around me and informed by my education in art and design history. The rugs and pillows I produce are explorations of color and geometry, places, memories, favorite things, or ideas a client has in mind. I strive to create objects that are unique, beautiful, and functional and will last for generations.
